Irresistible “haute dogs” at Wurst by Jeroen Meus (For sausage fans)

Last Updated: September 30, 2019

Did you know my hometown Leuven has its very own tv chef? Jeroen Meus is just about the only tv cook whose show I love to watch. That man can make a simple cheese sandwich sound like a culinary delight and the dishes he prepares on his show Dagelijkse Kost (“Daily Meal”) are simple, normal people dishes with a twist.

Jeroen Meus used to have a high-end restaurant, Luzine, that was always fully booked. A while ago he switched his focus and closed the restaurant to come back with… Haute Dogs. That's right. At Wurst in Leuven (soon also in Ghent) he sells culinary hot dogs with names such as Memphis Soul, The Hunter and Sugar Daddy.

Wurst opens at 11.45 a.m. for lunch at it isn't unusual to see a waiting line of people curling out onto the street. We got lucky and snatched the last table when we got there at 12 p.m. My lunch partner ordered the Mexico '86 with cornbread, guacamole, mexican salad, cilantro, merguez würst, sour cream, jalapeño and nachos while I chose the Chicken Caesar with piccolo, romaine lettuce, mimosa, chicken würst, caesar dressing, bacon and parmigiano (mmm, parmigiano).

While we both agreed that the haute dogs were delicious, we also were also hungry again after a couple of hours. Granted, we didn't take a side dish, but I felt like a €9,5 lunch should have kept me going until dinner. That being said, the ingredients tasted super fresh, the service was friendly and the place has a cool vibe.

I'd recommend trying it as Wurst sells hot dogs you won't find anywhere else and they are really good, just keep in mind that you mind need a little snack around 4 p.m.

My opinion exactly. Love the taste but somehow it’s not enough to pass as a full lunch dish.

I loved the dessert sugar daddy on their menu, an eclair looking like a ‘hotdog’.
