Where are the Innsbruck Christmas markets?

The Innsbruck Christmas markets sit in 7 locations across the city, 4 of them in or next to the Old Town and 3 in outlying districts or up on the slopes above it. The Old Town market on Herzog-Friedrich-Straße is the one most visitors mean by “the Innsbruck Christmas Market”, and the sections below cover each market in turn.

Old Town Christmas Market (Christkindlmarkt Altstadt)

The Old Town Christmas Market stands directly in front of the Goldenes Dachl (Golden Roof), Innsbruck’s landmark, and Innsbruck Tourism calls it the oldest and largest Christmas market in the city. It has 65 stalls and a natural Christmas tree about 20 m (65.6 ft) tall, and a viewing terrace in the middle of the market looks over the stalls and up at the Golden Roof.

The Golden Roof oriel in Innsbruck's Old Town on Herzog-Friedrich-Straße

Every day at 17:00, the Amraser Turmbläser, a brass ensemble, play Christmas music from the Golden Roof balcony. The surrounding lanes carry 20 fairy-tale figures and 5 giant figures, and fairy-tale performances take place at a theatre wagon in Kiebachgasse. The market’s information stand sits next to the Ottoburg, a historic tower house on the edge of the Old Town.

Marktplatz Christmas Market

The Marktplatz Christmas Market is Innsbruck’s family market, on Marktplatz square beside the River Inn, a short walk west of the Old Town. More than 68 stalls sell alternative crafts, Christmas products and regional food, and children get a nostalgic carousel, a Kasperl puppet theatre and a virtual carriage ride.

The centrepiece is a Swarovski crystal tree 17.5 m (57.4 ft) tall and covered in 112,445 Swarovski crystals, with an hourly light show on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. On every Advent Sunday from 17:00 there is a small Advent celebration for children, and from the first Advent Sunday the Götzner Anklöpfler, a traditional Tyrolean carol group, sing every Friday from 19:00.

Maria-Theresien-Straße Christmas Market

The Maria-Theresien-Straße Christmas Market runs along Innsbruck’s main shopping street, just south of the Old Town, with a view up the street to the Nordkette mountains. Its 30 stalls sell international gifts and food under an avenue of illuminated trees and modern light installations.

This is the market to plan around if you are in Innsbruck after Christmas. It opens later than the Old Town market, on Wednesday, 25 November 2026, and stays open daily until Wednesday, 6 January 2027, so it is still serving hot chocolate and selling crafts after the Old Town and Marktplatz markets have closed.

Hungerburg Christmas Market

The Hungerburg Christmas Market is the city’s highest market, on the Hungerburg plateau above Innsbruck, and it is reached in 8 minutes on the Hungerburgbahn funicular from the Congress station in the city centre. Its 10 stalls sell Christmas souvenirs, handmade crafts and traditional food, with a panoramic view over the city on one side and the Karwendel Nature Park on the other.

The funicular stations were designed by the architect Zaha Hadid, and the line stops at the Alpenzoo on the way up. On Saturdays from 16:00 to 17:00 there is a storytelling hour for children. Like Maria-Theresien-Straße, the Hungerburg market runs until 6 January 2027.

Wiltener Platzl Christmas Market (Wiltener Weihnachtszauber)

The Wiltener Weihnachtszauber is a small evening market on Wiltener Platzl in the Wilten district, south of the city centre. Its 10 stalls sell handmade jewellery, one-off craft pieces and regional and international food, and it opens only from 16:00 to 20:00. The official opening is on Monday, 23 November 2026 at 18:00 with the Innseit’n Big Band, and every Sunday from 16:00 to 17:30 there is a children’s programme.

St. Nikolaus Christmas Market

The St. Nikolaus Christmas Market is the smallest of the 7, with 5 wooden stalls on Hans-Brenner-Platz in the historic St. Nikolaus district across the River Inn. It sells traditional crafts, baked goods and warm drinks from 16:00 to 21:00, and St. Nicholas visits on Sunday, 6 December 2026 at 18:00 to hand out surprises to children.

Kaiserweihnacht Bergisel

The Kaiserweihnacht (Imperial Christmas) is a weekend-only market at Bergisel, the hill with the ski jump on the southern edge of Innsbruck, with a panoramic view over the city. It runs on 6 weekends in 2026: 13-15 November, 20-22 November, 27-29 November, 4-8 December, 11-13 December and 18-20 December. Innsbruck Tourism describes mulled wine and traditional Kiachl as its specialities, alongside regional crafts and Tyrolean music.

The 4-8 December block is longer because 8 December is a public holiday in Austria. On Monday, 7 December the market opens 14:00 to 20:00, and on Tuesday, 8 December 11:00 to 20:00.

How do you visit all seven Innsbruck Christmas markets in one day?

You can visit all 7 Innsbruck Christmas markets in one day on foot by following the “Walk to Explore: Seven Christmas Markets” route published by Innsbruck Tourism. The walk covers 7 km (4.3 mi) with 356 m (1,168 ft) of elevation gain and takes around 4 hours, and the tourism office rates it easy.

The Old Town, Marktplatz and Maria-Theresien-Straße markets are within a few minutes of each other, so they work as one stop. Hungerburg is quicker by funicular than on foot, and Bergisel is easiest by public transport if you are short of time. Start with the afternoon-only markets in mind: Wiltener Platzl and St. Nikolaus do not open until 16:00.

What does it cost to visit the Innsbruck Christmas Market?

Entry to all 7 Innsbruck Christmas markets is free, so you only pay for what you eat, drink and buy. Hot drinks usually come in a mug with a deposit that you get back when you return it, or you keep the mug as a souvenir. Stalls set their own prices each season, so check them on the spot.

How do you get to the Innsbruck Christmas Market?

You can reach the Innsbruck Christmas Market by plane, train or car, and once you are in the city centre every market except Bergisel and Hungerburg is within walking distance.

For the outlying markets, take the Hungerburgbahn from the Congress station to Hungerburg, and take tram line 1 to the Bergisel stop, followed by a short uphill walk, for Kaiserweihnacht Bergisel. The Innsbruck Card, sold for 24, 48 or 72 hours, includes public transport in the city and the mountain lifts, and guests staying at least 2 nights at partner hotels get the free Welcome Card, which also covers public transport.

Where to eat near the Innsbruck Christmas Market?

Café Munding on Kiebachgasse, a few steps from the Old Town market, is Tyrol’s oldest confectionery, baking since 1803. In December it turns its windows into the panels of an Advent calendar, which makes it a good stop for coffee and cake between markets.

For a sit-down meal, the Old Town has traditional Tyrolean restaurants serving dishes such as Tiroler Gröstl and Kaspressknödel, and Hotel Goldener Adler has its own Tyrolean restaurant.

WonderfulWanderings Pro Tips

The 4 tips below come from the organiser’s 2026 calendar and Innsbruck Tourism’s own pages, and each one covers a date or a time that catches visitors out.

  1. Go to Maria-Theresien-Straße or the Hungerburg if you are in Innsbruck after Christmas. The Old Town, Marktplatz, Wiltener Platzl and St. Nikolaus markets all close on 23 December 2026, while those 2 run until 6 January 2027.
  2. Be at the Golden Roof at 17:00. The Amraser Turmbläser play Christmas music from the Golden Roof balcony every day at that time, and the market’s central terrace has the clearest view of them.
  3. Shop before 20:00 in the Old Town. The Old Town and Maria-Theresien-Straße markets stay open until 21:00, but the stalls selling goods close at 20:00, and the last hour is food and drink only.
  4. Leave the small markets for the evening. Wiltener Platzl and St. Nikolaus open only at 16:00, so put them at the end of a day that starts in the Old Town.
