Where are the Luxembourg Christmas markets?

The Luxembourg Christmas markets are spread across 5 locations in the Ville Haute, the old upper town of Luxembourg City, all within walking distance of each other. The sections below cover each market in turn, starting with the oldest.

The Grand Ducal Palace in Luxembourg City's Ville Haute

LĂ«tzebuerger ChrĂ«schtmaart, Place d’Armes

The LĂ«tzebuerger ChrĂ«schtmaart on Place d’Armes is the historic home of Luxembourg City’s Christmas market, held on this square since 1984. Wooden chalets sell gifts and festive food around a 12 m (39.4 ft) Nordmann fir from Schifflange, decorated with traditional candles and red baubles, and a giant nativity scene stands at the bandstand.

Covered gourmet corners give you somewhere to stand at a table with food and drink. For children, the market has a merry-go-round and the Wanterzuch, a small train ride through a winter forest.

Wantermaart, Place de la Constitution

The Wantermaart is the market around the GĂ«lle Fra, the gilded war memorial on Place de la Constitution, with a view over the PĂ©trusse Valley and the Pont Adolphe bridge. Its attractions include a 32 m (105 ft) Ferris wheel, a giant Christmas pyramid, a 13 m (42.7 ft) golden Christmas tree and 3 children’s fairground rides.

The Wantermaart puts local drinks first in 2026, with white, red and rosé mulled wines, craft wines with and without alcohol, organic options and punch. A panoramic dining area looks out over the valley, and new stalls this year include one selling Belgian fries.

Niklosmaart, Place de Paris

The Niklosmaart (St Nicholas Market) is on Place de Paris, between the old town and the railway station. Its chalets sell mulled wine and other hot drinks, Gromperekichelcher, soups, sausages, burgers, waffles, churros, crĂŞpes and pretzels, plus Christmas gifts and decorations.

A vintage carousel and a programme of live music run throughout the season. On certain days, children can meet Kleeschen, Luxembourg’s St Nicholas, at his cottage on the square.

Winterkids, Place Guillaume II

Winterkids is the children’s Christmas market on Place Guillaume II, the square locals call the Knuedler, in front of the city hall. Its centrepiece is the Adventskalennerhaus, a chalet with an Advent-calendar facade, alongside a giant slide, a flying reindeer ride and trampolines.

From Saturday, 19 December 2026, when the school holidays start, the Winterkids Village adds workshops, shows and concerts for families, open daily from 11:00 to 18:00.

Wanterpark, Kinnekswiss

The Wanterpark is an outdoor ice rink and food village of 5 chalets on the Kinnekswiss meadow in the municipal park. A giant illuminated heart, 12 m (39.4 ft) wide and 8 m (26.2 ft) tall, marks the entrance on Avenue Amélie. Like the other markets, it closes on 25 December.

What food can you eat at the Luxembourg Christmas Market?

Listed below are the foods you can eat at the Luxembourg Christmas markets, starting with the Luxembourgish specialities.

  • Gromperekichelcher. Fried potato cakes with onion and parsley, sold at every Luxembourgish market and Christmas stall, including the Niklosmaart.
  • Boxemännchen. A sweet brioche shaped like a little man, baked for St Nicholas Day on 6 December.
  • Sausages. Grilled sausages served at the Niklosmaart chalets.
  • Soups. Hot soups sold at the Niklosmaart.
  • Belgian fries. Sold from a new chalet at the Wantermaart in 2026.

  • Craft wines. Local wines with and without alcohol, on sale at the Wantermaart.

What can you buy at the Luxembourg Christmas Market?

The Luxembourg Christmas Market sells Christmas gifts and decorations from wooden chalets, mainly at the LĂ«tzebuerger ChrĂ«schtmaart on Place d’Armes and the Niklosmaart on Place de Paris. The Place d’Armes market is the one to head for if gifts are your main reason to visit, because the Ville de Luxembourg describes it as offering everything from gift ideas to festive treats.

What does it cost to visit the Luxembourg Christmas Market?

Entry to all 5 Luxembourg Christmas markets is free, and so is the public transport to reach them. You only pay for food, drink, shopping and rides such as the Ferris wheel. Cards are accepted almost everywhere in Luxembourg, including market stalls, so a small amount of cash is enough as a backup.

How do you get to the Luxembourg Christmas Market?

You get to the Luxembourg Christmas Market most easily by train or plane, and once you arrive, every bus, tram and second-class train in Luxembourg is free, a policy in place since 1 March 2020 for visitors as well as residents.

First, fly into Luxembourg Airport at Findel, about 6 km (3.7 mi) east of the city centre. Bus 16 runs from the terminal into town in around 20 minutes at no cost.

Second, take the train. Trains run from Trier in around 50 minutes, from Brussels in about 3 hours and from Paris Gare de l’Est on the TGV in about 2 hours 15 minutes. Luxembourg’s main station is a 15-minute walk or a short tram ride from the old town and the markets. To compare cross-border connections, check train times to Luxembourg.

Third, drive and park outside the centre. Luxembourg’s motorways have no tolls, but parking in the city is difficult, so use one of the park-and-ride sites on the edge of town and take the free tram in. For trips to the Moselle or the Ardennes, book a rental car in advance.

Where to stay near the Luxembourg Christmas Market?

The most convenient base is the Ville Haute, inside the old town and within a few minutes’ walk of all 5 markets, or the Gare quarter, which costs less and sits on the tram line. Luxembourg City’s hotels are aimed at business travellers, so weekend rates are often lower than midweek ones.

Park Inn by Radisson Luxembourg City is 10 minutes’ walk from the historic centre, and it is the hotel Sofie would book again after staying there: the room was big, the staff were helpful and the breakfast buffet was good. Check rates at Park Inn by Radisson Luxembourg City, or compare hotels in Luxembourg City if your dates are full.

Where to eat near the Luxembourg Christmas Market?

For a sit-down meal after the markets, Luxembourg City’s restaurants serve Luxembourgish dishes such as Judd mat Gaardebounen, smoked collar of pork with broad beans and the national dish, and Bouneschlupp, a green bean soup with bacon or smoked sausage. Träipen, black pudding with cabbage and apple sauce, is the dish traditionally eaten around the turn of the year, so the Winterlights season is the time to try it.

Luxembourg also fits easily into a longer Christmas market trip. The Trier Christmas Market in Germany is around 50 minutes away by train and runs until 22 December 2026, and the Christmas markets in Belgium are a direct train ride north. Our guide to things to do in Luxembourg City covers the casemates, the Corniche and the rest of the old town.

WonderfulWanderings Pro Tips

The 4 tips below come from the Ville de Luxembourg’s 2026 Winterlights pages, and each one covers a date or a cost that catches visitors out.

  1. Do not plan a Christmas Day visit. Every Winterlights market closes on Friday, 25 December 2026, and all of them shut at 18:00 on 24 and 31 December.
  2. Use the markets after Christmas. Winterlights runs until Sunday, 3 January 2027, so the week between Christmas and New Year still has all 5 markets open, unlike Trier across the border, which ends on 22 December.
  3. Leave the car and take the tram. Buses, trams and second-class trains are free across the country, and the old town has little parking.
  4. Bring children after 19 December. The Winterkids Village on Place Guillaume II adds workshops, shows and concerts from Saturday, 19 December 2026, when the school holidays start.
