1. Weihnachtsmarkt am Kölner Dom

The Weihnachtsmarkt am Kölner Dom, nicknamed the “Markt der Herzen” (Market of Hearts), is Cologne’s largest Christmas market. It fills Roncalliplatz directly in front of Cologne Cathedral from Monday, 16 November to Wednesday, 23 December 2026, closed on Sunday, 22 November for Totensonntag, Germany’s national day of remembrance. Opening hours run Sunday to Wednesday 11 am to 9 pm, Thursday and Friday 11 am to 10 pm, and Saturday 10 am to 10 pm.

The market’s organiser has run the Dom market for years and secured a further five-year contract to keep operating it, confirmed in March 2026. Stalls sell mulled wine, roasted chestnuts, handmade ornaments and gifts, with the illuminated cathedral towering over the square as the market’s backdrop, a scene that makes it Cologne’s most photographed Christmas market.

The Dom market sits right outside Köln Hauptbahnhof, Cologne’s main train station, making it the easiest of the six markets to reach directly from arrival. Köln Hauptbahnhof also has direct ICE connections to Frankfurt, Düsseldorf, Berlin and beyond, so it is worth checking train times to Cologne before you fix your dates.

2. Nikolausdorf (Village of St. Nicholas)

Nikolausdorf is a Christmas market at Rudolfplatz, between Neumarkt and the Belgian Quarter, in front of the historic Hahnentorburg gate. It runs from Monday, 16 November to Wednesday, 23 December 2026.

The market offers a stage programme of live music and dance performances alongside stalls selling handcrafted gifts, decorations and traditional Christmas items from local and international vendors. A hot drink served in a souvenir “Nicholas boot” mug is one of its best-known features.

The Hahnentorburg gate behind the market is one of the last surviving fragments of Cologne’s medieval city wall, giving Nikolausdorf a genuinely historic backdrop rather than a purpose-built one. Strings of lights and star-shaped illuminations hang above the stalls each evening, which is where the market’s “angels” theme comes from, and the square’s individually decorated wooden houses set it apart from Cologne’s other markets. 4. Heinzels Wintermärchen

Heinzels Wintermärchen is a Christmas market spread across Alter Markt and Heumarkt in Cologne’s old town, built around the local legend of the Heinzelmännchen, friendly house elves said to have once done the city’s work overnight. Alter Markt runs from Monday, 23 November to Wednesday, 23 December 2026, while Heumarkt runs longer, from 23 November 2026 to Sunday, 10 January 2027, closed on 24 and 25 December.

Heumarkt’s main draw is an open-air ice rink that stays open into January, alongside craft stalls and themed alleys spread across both squares. Alter Markt focuses on handmade goods from craftspeople across Europe, while Heumarkt combines the ice rink with food and drink stalls.

5. Kölner Hafen-Weihnachtsmarkt (Harbour Christmas Market)

The Kölner Hafen-Weihnachtsmarkt is a Christmas market on the Rhine, next to the Chocolate Museum in the Rheinauhafen district. It opens earliest of the six, on Friday, 13 November 2026, and runs through Wednesday, 23 December 2026.

1. Do not travel for 22 November. The Weihnachtsmarkt am Kölner Dom, the biggest of the six, shuts that Sunday for Totensonntag, Germany’s day of remembrance. The date moves every year, so check it against the season you are booking rather than against this one.
2. A late-December trip needs the right two squares. Five of the six markets close on 23 December. Only Heumarkt keeps going, through to 10 January 2027 and with the ice rink, and the harbour site reopens as the Neujahrsmarkt from 26 December to 3 January.
3. Come in the second week of November for the harbour market alone. The Kölner Hafen-Weihnachtsmarkt beside the Chocolate Museum opens on 13 November 2026, three days before the cathedral, Rudolfplatz and Neumarkt markets and ten before the old town ones.
