The market opens the day after Totensonntag, the German day of the dead, which falls on Sunday 22 November in 2026. Where is the Frankfurt Christmas Market?

The Frankfurt Christmas Market runs through the city centre “like a glowing ribbon”, in visitfrankfurt’s words, from the Roßmarkt and the Hauptwache in the shopping district down to the Römerberg and the Mainkai on the River Main. The 6 parts of the market are listed below.

Römerberg

The Römerberg is the historic heart of the Frankfurt Christmas Market, the square in front of the Römer city hall, lined with rebuilt half-timbered houses. The market’s Christmas tree stands here: in 2026 it is a 27 m (89 ft) spruce named Nikolaus, from Wald-Königsleiten in Austria’s Pinzgau region. The Römerberg stage hosts choirs most Fridays to Sundays at 17:10, and brass ensembles play Christmas music from the gallery of St Nicholas Church on Wednesday and Saturday evenings at 18:00.

Paulsplatz

Paulsplatz is the square next to St Paul’s Church (Paulskirche), just north of the Römerberg. St Paul’s Church hosts the 104th Christmas Market of Frankfurt Artists from 24 November to 20 December 2026, open daily from 12:00 to 20:00 with free admission.

Mainkai and the children’s Christmas market

The Mainkai is the riverside stretch of the market along the Main, and the road is closed to traffic during the market. East of the Eiserner Steg footbridge, the Mainkai hosts the children’s Christmas market, with a carousel and Ferris wheel, a craft workshop, and theatre, music and storytelling on an illuminated boat on the river.

Hauptwache

The Hauptwache has Christmas stalls of its own and sits directly opposite the Zeil, Frankfurt’s main shopping street. It is also the city’s main S-Bahn and U-Bahn interchange, 5 minutes’ walk from the Römerberg.

Friedrich-Stoltze-Platz (Pink Christmas)

Friedrich-Stoltze-Platz hosts Rosa Weihnacht (Pink Christmas), a section of the market decorated entirely in pink, where the LGBTQ+ community among others meets. Its wooden huts sell hot cocktails and homemade soups.

Roßmarkt (WeihnachtsRoßmarkt)

The Roßmarkt joined the Frankfurt Christmas Market in 2021 and links the market from the Roßmarkt across the Zeil to the Römerberg. It has a large Christmas pyramid bar serving mulled wine, a Ferris wheel and a horse-drawn carriage for photos, set against Frankfurt’s high-rise skyline.

How old is the Frankfurt Christmas Market?

The Frankfurt Christmas Market is one of the oldest in Germany, with its first documented mention in 1393, according to Wikipedia’s article on the market. Until the 1870s and 1880s, Frankfurt parents bought their children’s toys almost exclusively at the Christmas market.

How do you get to the Frankfurt Christmas Market?

You can reach the Frankfurt Christmas Market by U-Bahn, tram or S-Bahn, and public transport is the only practical option because there is no event parking.

First, take the U4 or U5 underground to Dom/Römer, the stop closest to the Römerberg. The U4 runs here directly from Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof, the main railway station.

Second, take tram 11, 12 or 14 to Römer/Paulskirche, between the Römerberg and Paulsplatz.

Third, take any S-Bahn line from S1 to S6, the S8 or S9, or the U1, U2, U3, U6, U7 or U8 to Hauptwache, then walk 5 minutes to the Römerberg. The S8 and S9 also connect Frankfurt Airport with the city centre.

The S-Bahn link makes the market an easy stopover between flights. Compare flights to Frankfurt, and if you are arriving by rail or coach from elsewhere in Germany, check train and bus connections to Frankfurt.

The most convenient base is the Altstadt around the Römerberg or the city centre around the Hauptwache and the Zeil, because the whole market is within walking distance of both. The streets around the Hauptbahnhof are a practical alternative, 2 stops from Dom/Römer on the U4. To check what is available, compare hotels in Frankfurt and the rest of Germany and book early for the December weekends.

Frankfurt also works as a base for other markets in the region. The Rüdesheim Christmas market in the Rhine valley and the Heidelberg Christmas markets are both reachable by train, and our guide to Germany’s Christmas markets covers the rest of the country.

WonderfulWanderings Pro Tips

The 4 tips below come from the official 2026 programme on visitfrankfurt.travel.

  1. Do not plan a Christmas week visit. The market closes on Tuesday 22 December 2026, so anyone arriving on 23 December or later finds the squares empty.
  2. Be on the Römerberg at 18:00 on a Wednesday or Saturday. That is when brass ensembles play Christmas music from the gallery of St Nicholas Church, on 25 and 28 November and on 2, 5, 9, 12, 16 and 19 December 2026, as well as on opening night.
  3. Leave the car outside the centre. The organisers provide no parking for the event, and the Mainkai road is closed to traffic during the market, so take the U4 or U5 to Dom/Römer.
  4. Post your Christmas cards at the tourism stall under the tree. The Frankfurt tourism office’s stall on the Römerberg forwards stamped cards to Deutsche Post for a special Christmas market postmark, free of charge, but only for cards with traditional stamps, not app-bought mobile stamps.
