Where are the Hamburg Christmas markets?

The main Hamburg Christmas markets sit in the city centre between the Hauptbahnhof (main station), the Binnenalster lake and the Rathausmarkt, and all of them are within walking distance of each other. Hamburg’s tourism portal lists more than 20 markets across the city’s districts, and the sections below cover the main ones.

Historic Christmas Market, Rathausmarkt

The Historic Christmas Market (Historischer Weihnachtsmarkt) on the Rathausmarkt is Hamburg’s main Christmas market, set against the neo-Renaissance facade of Hamburg City Hall. It is organised by Roncalli and has run for more than 20 years under the motto “fair, organic and regional”, with around 80 stalls.

The Flying Santa crosses the market on his sleigh every day at 16:00, 18:00 and 20:00. In the Spielzeuggasse (toy lane), a large model railway runs above the stalls, and a separate Spezialitätengasse (specialities lane) gathers the food stalls. The stalls sell toys from around the world, crafts, wood carvings and Christmas decorations.

Weißer Zauber, Jungfernstieg

Weißer Zauber (White Magic) is the Christmas market on the Jungfernstieg, right on the water’s edge of the Binnenalster lake, with white pagoda tents instead of the usual wooden huts. It looks out over the Alstertanne, the illuminated Christmas tree that stands in the lake, and it has a historic Ferris wheel.

The stalls sell crafts, gloves, hats and scarves, toys, jewellery, porcelain, maritime gifts, blown glass and Christmas decorations. Fairy-tale ships (Märchenschiffe) moor alongside the market from 26 November to 23 December 2026, and St Nicholas visits on Sunday, 6 December from 16:30.

Gänsemarkt Christmas Market

The Gänsemarkt Christmas Market builds a village of gingerbread-style huts around the Lessing monument, entered through a large gate decorated like a gingerbread house. The huts are made of wood and natural materials, and they sell crafts, natural cosmetics and organic goods.

The Gänsemarkt is known for its food, including spit-roast goose with dumplings and red cabbage, suckling pig, Flammkuchen and Schmalzgebäck, and its food stands may stay open until 23:00. Hamburg’s tourism portal describes it as a popular after-work meeting point for a mulled wine.

St. Petri Christmas Market

The St. Petri Christmas Market is a small market beside St. Peter’s Church (Petrikirche), Hamburg’s oldest surviving church, between the Rathausmarkt and the Hauptbahnhof. Its wooden huts sell high-quality toys, crafts and festive decorations, and it runs from 18 November to 23 December 2026.

Fleetinsel Christmas Market

The Fleetinsel Christmas Market is a small, maritime-themed market beside one of Hamburg’s canals (Fleete), between the Alster and the Elbe, at the Heiligengeistbrücke. It sells mulled wine, Christmas food, gifts and decorations, and a large covered area keeps you dry in Hamburg’s frequent rain.

Santa Pauli, Spielbudenplatz

Santa Pauli is the adults’ Christmas market on Spielbudenplatz in St. Pauli, next to the Reeperbahn, and it describes itself as Hamburg’s “hottest” Christmas market. It opens earliest of the central markets, on 9 November 2026, and runs into the night, with live music daily and strip shows on the main stage from Thursday to Saturday, so parts of it are for over-18s only.

Its Glühweinapotheke (mulled wine pharmacy) lets you mix your own mulled wine from white or red wine with pipettes of cinnamon, clove, plum, star anise and orange extracts.
