The Basler Wienachtsdorf is the only Basel Christmas market open between Christmas and New Year.

The Christmas season starts a week before the market, on Friday 20 November 2026, with Ystimme, the ceremony at which the city switches on its Christmas lights, with carol singing and free mulled wine and punch, according to the Canton of Basel-Stadt.

Where is the Basel Christmas Market?

The Basel Christmas Market sits in the centre of Grossbasel, Basel’s Old Town on the left bank of the Rhine, on Barfüsserplatz and Münsterplatz. The two squares are a few minutes’ walk apart, and smaller markets run on Theaterplatz and, across the Mittlere Brücke in Kleinbasel, on Claraplatz and Rheingasse. Each market is described below.

Basel's Old Town, where the Christmas market fills Barfüsserplatz and Münsterplatz in December

Barfüsserplatz

Barfüsserplatz is the largest part of the Basel Christmas Market, with chalets around the historic Barfüsserkirche, the church that now holds the Historical Museum. Its meeting point is a 13 m (42.7 ft) Christmas pyramid serving hot drinks, visible from across the square. Barfüsserplatz is where you find most of the food stalls, including a Feuerzangenbowle stand where the rum-soaked sugarloaf punch is prepared in a copper pot, according to Basel Tourism.

Münsterplatz

Münsterplatz is the quieter, more atmospheric half of the market, in front of Basel Minster, the red sandstone cathedral that went up between 1019 and 1500. The Münsterplatz market has been part of Basel’s Christmas season since 2011. A tall Christmas tree stands on the square with ornaments by the Basel Christmas decorator Johann Wanner, and the Märliwald (fairytale forest) offers children tin casting, candle dipping, gingerbread decorating and a puppet theatre, from 26 November to 22 December 2026 (13:30-19:00 on weekdays, 11:00-19:00 at weekends).

Walk behind the Minster to the Pfalz terrace for the view over the Rhine and the lights of Kleinbasel. During Advent, the stairwell of St. Martin’s tower is lit in the evening from 16:00 to 18:00, Monday to Friday, and the climb costs CHF 6 (about €6, $8, £5) per person, with last entry at 17:30 and only for groups of 2 or more.

Basler Wienachtsdorf on Theaterplatz

The Basler Wienachtsdorf is a Christmas village of around 40 huts running from Theaterplatz to the area around Elisabethenkirche, open from 26 November 2026 to 3 January 2027. Its huts sell design, arts and crafts, specialities and winter drinks, and it stays open later than the main market, until 23:00 on Friday and Saturday.

Claraplatz and the Adväntsgass in Kleinbasel

Claraplatz, on the Kleinbasel side of the Mittlere Brücke, has a smaller Christmas market built around a large alpine hut, with food and drink stalls serving cheese dishes, meat and hot drinks. It runs alongside the main market, though the city does not publish separate hours for it. A few streets away, Rheingasse turns into the Adväntsgass im Glaibasel, a neighbourhood Christmas market of over 50 stalls for 2026, extended to Lindenberg this year. The Adväntsgass opens in the evenings on weekdays and from 14:00 at weekends, and its stalls serve mulled wine and a drink called Hot Jamie.

What food and drink can you try at the Basel Christmas Market?

The Basel Christmas Market serves Swiss and Basel specialities alongside mulled wine, and Basler Läckerli are the local thing to buy and take home. Listed below are the foods and drinks to look for.

  • Basler Brunsli. Basler Brunsli are chocolate and almond biscuits spiced with cinnamon and cloves, made in December.
  • Raclette. Raclette is melted Swiss cheese scraped over potatoes or bread, served hot from the stalls.
  • Grilled sausages. Grilled sausages are the standard savoury snack on Barfüsserplatz.
  • Flame-grilled salmon. Flame-grilled salmon, cooked on an open beechwood fire in the Finnish style, is served at one cabin on Münsterplatz.

How do you get to the Basel Christmas Market?

You reach the Basel Christmas Market by tram, because trams 8, 11 and 16 stop at Barfüsserplatz, right at the market. Listed below are the main routes into Basel.

WonderfulWanderings Pro Tips

The 4 tips below come from Basel Tourism’s 2026 listings and from Basel’s own visitor rules, and each one saves time or money on a market visit.

  1. Do not leave Münsterplatz for the last afternoon. On 23 December 2026, the final day, Münsterplatz closes at 18:00 and Barfüsserplatz at 20:00, earlier than the usual 20:30.
  2. Go to the Wienachtsdorf if you arrive after Christmas. The main market ends on 23 December, but the Basler Wienachtsdorf on Theaterplatz runs to 3 January 2027 and stays open to 23:00 on Friday and Saturday.
  3. Pick up your BaselCard at check-in and leave the car. Every overnight guest gets one free, and it covers trams 8, 11 and 16 to Barfüsserplatz and the bus 50 from EuroAirport.
  4. Visit the Adväntsgass after 17:00 on a weekday. The Kleinbasel street market only opens at 17:00 Monday to Friday, so a daytime walk along Rheingasse finds it shut.
