Where is the Kraków Christmas Market?

The Kraków Christmas Market is on the Main Market Square (Rynek Główny), the medieval square at the centre of Kraków’s Old Town, set up around the Town Hall Tower. The Cloth Hall and St Mary’s Basilica stand on the same square, and the Old Town around it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1978. In 2025 the City of Kraków also ran a second, smaller Christmas fair on the Mały Rynek (Little Market Square), just behind St Mary’s, from 1 December to 1 January; its 2026 dates had not been published at the time of writing.

The market square is decorated with more than 600 live Christmas trees from spruce plantations, warm white lights and garlands, and a Venetian carousel turns for children, according to the City of Kraków’s report on the 2025 market.

What is the Kraków nativity scene contest?

The Kraków nativity scene contest (Konkurs Szopek Krakowskich) is a yearly competition of szopki, the tall, glittering, many-towered nativity scenes modelled on Kraków’s churches and buildings, held on the Main Market Square during the Christmas market. The 84th contest takes place on Thursday 3 December 2026, according to the Museum of Kraków, which organises it. The timetable is listed below.

  1. Thursday 3 December 2026, 10:00-12:00. Makers set out their szopki at the foot of the Adam Mickiewicz monument on the Main Market Square.
  2. Thursday 3 December 2026, 12:00. A procession carries the szopki around the square after the noon bugle call, then into the Krzysztofory Palace.
  3. 9 December 2026 to 28 February 2027. The post-contest exhibition of szopki runs at the Museum of Kraków.

The Kraków szopka tradition is inscribed on UNESCO’s list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, which makes 3 December the single most distinctive day to be at the market.

How do you get to the Kraków Christmas Market?

You reach the Kraków Christmas Market on foot, because the Main Market Square sits in the pedestrianised centre of the Old Town. Listed below are the routes into Kraków.

WonderfulWanderings Pro Tips

The 4 tips below come from the organisers’ 2026 announcements and the City of Kraków’s own records, and each one covers a date or a change that affects when you go.

  1. Be on the square on Thursday 3 December. The 84th Kraków nativity scene contest sets out its szopki at the Adam Mickiewicz monument from 10:00 to 12:00, and the procession around the square leaves at noon.
  2. Do not assume the market closes on 1 January. The 2025-2026 market ended on 1 January 2026, but the organiser plans the 2026-2027 market to run until 3 or 6 January 2027, so a first-week-of-January trip may still catch it.
  3. See the szopki after the contest, too. If you miss 3 December, the post-contest exhibition at the Museum of Kraków runs from 9 December 2026 to 28 February 2027.
  4. Plan Christmas Eve around a family holiday. Christmas Eve, Wigilia, has been a public holiday and shop-closure day in Poland since 2025, and it is the most important night of the Polish Christmas, spent at a family dinner. See our guide to Polish holiday dates for the rest of the season.
